Task 1
Journaling: Reflect on the readings about Spanish history and political landscape
Allow 3 hours for this task before traveling to Spain. Use your journal (and remember to pack it for the trip!), to read alone and reflect on the readings in Part 1 of the Information Pack on Spain – the last section in this guide. Part 1 is about the history, political systems and human rights situation.
As you read, and thoughts come to mind, cluster them under the following broad headings:
- Questions I have on Spain’s history and political landscape…
- What I connect with most when reading…
- What I do not like from what I read…
- Similarities with South Africa…
- Differences from South Africa…
- One example of social change from Spain’s recent history and its main outcomes…
Below are a set of questions to prompt your own further and deeper questions and critical analysis during and after your reading:
- What thoughts arise on Africa and Spain’s relationship today and in the past?
- What is Spain’s historical place and role in the world, compared to today?
- How are you understanding struggles between different regions within Spain?
- What is the picture you have of social change struggles in Spain through history?
- How would you explain Spain’s more recent history from 1945 to today, and who the major protagonists have been driving and shaping social change?
Be ready with your journal notes for your SCI group work that will synthesize your respective analyses.
Task 2
Group work in SCI groups: Create a poster of your group’s Picture of Spain’s social change journey
Working in your SCI group before departing for Spain, design a group poster that represents a synthesis of your answers that you have each journaled. The poster must be colourful and creative, using a combination of text and artistic expression. The poster will be used in Activity 1 as part of reflections on videos introducing Spain, and will be share with Spanish comrades and colleagues.
Task 3
Journaling: Has your analysis deepened?
In what ways has the Tekano fellowship journey and your interim life and work experience, shifted or deepened your analysis of this article: Coovadia et al (2009) ‘The health and health system of South Africa: historical roots of current public health challenges’, The Lancet, Vol 374, 5 Sep 2009, 817-834 https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(09)60951-X/fulltext
Airport pre-module briefing: Readying for Module 4 to take off!
2 hours
Aims
To help us to:
- Ease anxieties that we may have about our trip together and be ready for learning fun
- Have a clear picture of what our ten-day trip to Spain involves and agree a common framing for this last module
- Agree how we will approach our learning and sharing in Spain about social justice activism
- Be clear on important logistical information about the trip
Task 1
Journaling: Refining our SCI posters on Spain
(1 hour 15 minutes)
We will be at OR Tambo International Airport well ahead of our flight. This is an opportune time for deepening your reading on Spain and reflective journaling, as part of getting ready for Module 4 to take off! Do as much of this reading in advance of traveling, but where this was not possible, use time while we travel.
In the first and last activity of this module, you will present your SCI poster about the relevance of learning about Spain for South African health equity grappling. Your Pre-Module Work task was:
Working in your SCI group before departing for Spain, design a group poster that represents a synthesis of your answers that you have each journaled. The poster must be colourful and creative, using a combination of text and artistic expression. The poster will be used in Activity 1 as part of reflections on videos introducing Spain, and will be share with Spanish comrades and colleagues.
While we are in transit, further refine your group posters:
- Reading: You will have received the final section (titled ‘Spain – Information Pack’) of this Fellows Guide to Module 3 well ahead of our travel. It offers summative information on Spain’s history and many links to additional readings. Continue your reading, while we are in transit, and flying.
- Poster refining: You will present your Poster Stage 1 during Activity 1. Then during the week, you can add answers and embellishments ahead of Day 5 when we celebrate what we have learned during the visit, in our closing celebration of our fellowship, as Activity 10.
Task 2
Pre-Travel Social Contracts
(45 minutes)
Module 4 is no ordinary gathering and it needs some very special contracting with each other and as a group, if it is to yield the depth and extent of power possible from such an international learning and sharing experience.
In doing this Tekano will establish ground rules for our time in Spain. Tekano has some minimal ground rules to propose we contract around. These are critical for everyone’s pleasure and safety on this kind of excursion. We’ll also have a buddy system that we’ll set up in this Activity. Buddy groups will be responsible and accountable for each other’s wellbeing and safety while traveling:
Ground rules to discuss and contract on
- Be safe!
- Don’t lose your buddies
- Always adhere to Covid-19 pre-cautions
- Don’t leave without letting anyone know where you are going
- No drug or alcohol abuse
- Have fun!
- Keep time
- Be culturally sensitive!
- Be open to new and different experiences!
- SA rules don’t apply!
- Be alert, dynamic and streetwise
- You may be triggered, warning!
- No jay walking!
Photography assignment
For the time in Spain, three Fellows will have a task of capturing our time and moments there, using still photography. This will be directed by Marta, and will tell the journey of Module 4. After the module, Fellows will collate and print these into a photo book album with support from Tekano. Let’s all help support the photographers, to make these photographs high quality and memorable!
