Aims | To help us to:
- Conclude Module 1 by looking at consolidating and applying our learning in our own community context
- Look ahead to Module 2 on the Political Economy of Health
Task 1 Plenary
Assignment to consolidate and apply learnings – the health system within your own local municipality
20 minutes
We’ll look back at our work begun at the close of Activity 7 on health systems within our own local municipality. This short assignment is designed to keep our learning and conversation going, so that we apply Module 1’s learning, the tools and knowledge and start creating linkages with Module 2 on the Political Economy of Health.
Assignment for Module 1
My local health system challenges
Your assignment task is to revisit the thinking that you began during Activity 7 when you are back at home, and reconsider your responses by actually visiting your local health facility in your local community. Visit the facility with the questions below in mind. After you have visited, compile your reflections on the questions below.
Be as creative as you like in how you record and document this, and be ready to present your compilation in Module 2. You could do a video, a photoshoot, a drawing, anything catchy and creative, or at least a dynamic presentation of your answers. As you are doing this activity do not forget to journal your experience.
The state of your local health system
- What does your local health system look like (i.e. its structure) and how does the system work?
- What is your assessment and rating of the capacity of your local health system to meet the health needs of the local population?
- What is the quality of the healthcare provided? And what are the implications on the health of your local municipality?
The causes of the problems in your local health system
- What explains the state, quality and outcomes of your local health system?
- How does the state and quality of your local health system link to what has happened since the democratic dispensation from 1994?
- What has been the role and impacts of colonialism and apartheid on your local health system?
- What do you think has been the role and impact of neoliberalism on the state, quality and outcomes of your local health system?
The tasks for key improvements to your local health system
- What is the approach needed to agree what the critical tasks in your local health system are, that can bring about key and lasting changes?
We’ll end this session with time for questions about the assignment and any other issues or concerns emerging from Module 1.
Task 2 Plenary
Looking ahead to Module 2
10 minutes
We’ll close this module by hearing from the Tekano team about what we have to look forward to from Module 2 on the Political Economy of Health.
Once we have closed the week, there is a last session that will be facilitated by the Tekano Monitoring & Evaluation Unit, to receive your feedback on what was good, bad and ugly and any make overs needed for an improved fellowship programme.
